Khovar Collection

This collection draws its inspiration from the tribal villages of Hazaribagh in Northeastern India, where the mud walls of village homes are adorned with expansive, figurative murals. The process begins with a dark earthen base, layered with pale clay. Before the top layer dries, women in the villages brush away the lighter clay using broken combs or their fingers, revealing fluid, organic silhouettes.

This collection draws its inspiration from the tribal villages of Hazaribagh in Northeastern India, where communities cover the mud walls of their homes in expansive, figurative murals each spring to mark the marriage season.

Working with local artists, we translated these bold, graphic forms into wallpaper and linen fabric, in a palette of earthy tones drawn from the region’s natural clays.

Drawn to the exaggerated scale and the boldness of the Khovar designs, we commissioned women in the villages to do three paintings for us (leaf, vine, flower) – which we have translated into a collection of fabrics and wallpapers.
